Viveros Hernandorena is in the middle of a campaign to sell bare root plants, a business segment that is consolidating year after year, and where this campaign already exceeds 400,000 plants sold.
If Viveros Hernandorena is a reference in potted stone fruit trees, it is also a reference in bare root plants in species such as almond, kaki, kiwi, quince or pomegranate, crops where monovarieties predominate and reduced variety-pattern combinations, which allows for better management of the nursery field. “The bare root plant nursery allows us to have large volumes and thus meet the demand of our clients at a very specific time, from December to March, the period in which the plantings must be carried out,” explains Rosa Hernandorena, commercial director of Viveros Hernandorena. “We have gone from 150,000 bare root plants five years ago to 400,000 this campaign.”
Precisely in the almond tree, for this end of campaign period, Viveros Hernandorena launches a promotional campaign, with significant discounts when purchasing the plant.
Characteristics of the bare root plant:
The bare root plant that is marketed has been in a field nursery between one and two years depending on the species. It is a homogeneous plant in terms of height and caliber, well formed, cut at a height of 1.2 meters, and which has received the utmost care during its period in the field. “We believe that a well-cared-for plant in the nursery is synonymous with quality, which is why we invest a lot in all the tasks to be carried out at the precise moment: good preparation of the land, pre-planting work and analysis, continuously controlled fertigation, pruning and guided , in pre-emergency treatments, pest control and post-starting tasks”, argues Rosa Hernandorena, commercial director of Viveros Hernandorena.
Viveros Hernandorena has also increased the area of the nursery field: from eight hectares in 2018 to the current 20, which has allowed them to increase the number of species and the volume available.
Integrated pest and disease control is being carried out in the nursery fields, and they are already beginning to apply some outdoor biological control strategies.
Cutting the plant to 1.20 meters is being key to saving logistics costs for customers since, thanks to this height, not only is post-starting work in the nursery easier, but also the space that occupy the pallets at the time of transport.
Pre-shipment treatment:
One of the great differences of Viveros Hernandorena with respect to other nurseries is that all the tasks prior to the shipment of the bare root plant, such as selection, baling, cleaning or palletizing, are carried out in the warehouse.
In this way, the freshness of the root is preserved. In addition, they have specific cold rooms for stocking, and they work with logistics operators to whom they have transmitted their know-how to ensure that the plant travels in the best possible conditions, until it is delivered to the customer.
