Nowadays, there are companies dedicated to creating and evaluating new and different varieties using natural methods and techniques (non-GMO, Genetically Modified Organisms), with crosses and selection of parental and their progeny.
A variety created by a plant breeder is patented and protected at European level, with the Community Plant Variety Right (CPVR) and is subject to the plant breeder’s rights (PBR).
All protected variety is subject to payment of a royalty, a fee that is paid to the breeder for plantation licenses, being forbidden the propagation and the grafts removal.
