The pomegranate

In recent years we have seen an increasing use of this fruit, due to its healthy good qualities, and also due to the improvement in the presentation of the fourth range and juices. The farmer’s interest in this crop has increased for its good profitability. Besides that, Europe is the largest consumer of this fruit.

Planting frame: 4-5m. per street * 3-4 m. per line. It is a fruit bush, not a fruit tree.

The most common diseases are Phytophthora, Armilaria and Alternaria. Regarding the pests that can affect this crop we can talk about borers that make galleries in the wood, aphids and scale insects. The most important physiopathies are fruit cracking and sun blow.

Irrigation needs: At the producing area of Elche, it would be recommended an irrigation of 4400-5500 m3/ha. per year, depending on rainfalls. The kc of the pomegranate already exists, which can be seen in the IVIA new irrigation portal. The pomegranate holds up well the high summer temperatures and tolerates drought well. The pomegranate has shallow roots. Deficit irrigation increases the number of fruit on the tree. Contributions of calcium and boron help to improve the cracked during the fattening fruit period.

Fruit thinning: flowers usually get grouped. If all of them come out, the thinning should be done to leave 1-2 fruits per cluster. Keep in mind that the first flowering is the best. The third flower fruits do not rippen. Make two passes of thinning: one after the physiological fall of flowers and fruits, and the second one later in July to remove poor quality fruit.
