Persimmon pioneers

Production and selling of fruit trees both bare-root and container-grown.
The tree nursery is located in a decisive place in the Valencian area of La Ribera del Júcar, nerve centre where the phenomenon of the variety Rojo Brillante was born and has been developed. Persimmon has established itself as the most important species within our company. The reproduction of persimmon fruit trees dates back more than 40 years ago, and we are still today a reference nursery of young persimmon trees.
One of the key points to our marketplace positioning is the good relationship we have established with universities, research institutes, cooperatives and experimental fields.
The experience of our technical and commercial staff and their work and active participation in trials, varietal development collections, improved cultivation techniques and pest and disease controls have given them the best preparation.
Modern facilities have helped us to expand our production capacity. In addition, our trade expansion to other countries -both within and outside the European Union- has allowed that currently the 75% of persimmon trees sales are intended for export. We have customers in countries such as France, Portugal, Italy, Morocco, Turkey and Uruguay.
Since 2000, 1.4 million persimmon trees have been sold. During the last 5 years the number of traded trees is stabilized with an average of 130,000 trees per year, this represents the 30% of our turnover.

All tasks of the season are focused on the future planting of each tree on a farmland. A well-studied production system allows to obtain the highest quality plant.
Within the characteristic of a single varietal species, we always pursue the goal of advancing in the study of new and different products by developing new farming techniques.
We work with three patterns, Diospyros lotus, Diospyros virginiana and Diospyros kaki. Depending on the cultivation area and soil and climate conditions, it is performed a study for choosing the best pattern. D. lotus pattern is the most used reproduction pattern. Although we should not forget the D. virginiana pattern, which is preferred for special soil conditions and also for grafting non-astringent varieties. D. virginiana pattern is considered an eco-sustainable pattern; it is characterized by an efficient irrigation water consumption and lees need for nutrients, what leads to cost savings.
Regarding persimmon varieties, obviously there is a star one: Rojo Brillante variety. It is responsible for the great success of persimmon cultivation in Spain. Other varieties such as Triumph, Jiro, Fuyu, Fuyu Hana, and Tone Wase among others are also reproduced according to our customers demand.
After years of research, we are preparing the introduction of new varieties to our catalogue. We have been focused on searching different varietal options to Rojo Brillante and we have found an interesting way to achieve earliness and size, within the persimmon line mutation.

Quality means homogeneity in size and height, healthy and well-formed roots, perfect health of the soil checked by analysis and technical inspections, without forgetting the correct operation of the tree during and after the transplantation.

Our work does not finish at the nursery. We provide technical support to farmers which is essential to guide them to their cultivation success.

Product presentation is another differentiating point in Viveros Hernandorena, we not only reproduce bare-root but also container- grown trees.
Barer-root tree: tree cultivated for two years in the field, it is prepared for extracting and transplanting only during the months of vegetative stop. The height of the tree is 140-160 cm. according to its variety. Presentation of the root without soil.
Container-grown tree: 1 year tree cultivated and protected in greenhouses. It is ready for sale during the 12 months of the year. The height of the tree is 60-80cm. Presentation of the root in a 1,5 litres container, cultivated with coconut fibre substrate.
Other products on sale: seeds, germinated seed in alveolus trays and buds of different varieties.

It is also important to take care of the logistics service and the dispatch of the goods.
We have special packages and vehicles for the transport of trees, ensuring delivery in a timely manner.
We manage all the documents and required certificates for entering into third countries.

kaki tree in bare root

Fruit trees à la carte

Viveros Hernandorena is a company in full process of expansion, dedicated to the production of fruit plants potted and bareroots, which already has presence in different countries and counts with the experience of three generations in the nursery sector. It is specialized in the sale of potted fruit trees, which offers the possibility of planting throughout the year..

Located in the Valencian town of Carlet, it has three production centers, which performs several plants producing fruit species mainly engaged in professional producer, among which are, in order of importance: peach, nectarine, almond, plum, persimmon, apricot, olive and quince. They also have a close relationship with major hybridizers and public and private research centers, what allows them to offer their clients the latest varieties’ obtenings and production techniques.

Primarily, the company bases its production system in the micro-graft, which then goes through the different formats of cultivation that it uses: container, hydroponic cultivation and orchard. “With the micro-grafting technique we ensure the production of the plant combining variety, rootstock and the format of choice for our clients, in a relatively short time.” explains Rosa Hernandorena, Sales Manager of the company.

The pot as sale format offers the possibility of plantations throughout the year, thus improving the service, which is completed with the transport tracking and direct delivery to the client, always with a fast and convenient packaging.

Regarding health and safety, Viveros Hernandorena has two agricultural technicians on staff to ensure the maximum quality and phytosanitary control of all production, in addition to the control and analysis performed by the Plant Health Service of the Department of Agriculture of the Valencian Community. “We recently implemented a computer system which gets the traceability of any departure from its order date to the delivery date, furthermore all plants are unitarily labeled to avoid any varietal error,” they explain.

As short-term objectives, they contemplate to extend the production of potted plant, as demand increases significantly each year, and open new lines of R & D to different species and retail formats.

Hernandorena organizes visits to their experimental orchards of stone fruit

As every year, Viveros Hernandorena organizes an exhibition at their experimental orchard and plots of reference with different fruit species selections obtained by well-known hybridization companies and plant breeding. This year we have an own experimental orchard in Carlet (Valencia) with over 50 varieties of fruit for field observation. You can visit also the experimental orchards of different breeders whom we work with..

With the arrival of the period of early stone fruit ripening and harvest, Hernandorena programs weekly visits to the plots for you to know in advance the varieties that they are currently multiplying. We understand that the best choice for future planting is better done watching the new varieties fruit on the tree, in situ, in the orchard.

For more information, anyone interested in participating in these visits can contact with any of the commercial area managers:

  • Gabriel Fernández (Andalusia Area Delegate): 619 07 86 07
  • Rosa Hernandorena (Commercial Director): 687 40 95 83
  • Fernando Hernandorena (Manager): 600 41 81 50

Likewise, the coming days 8th and 9th of June, it will take place EXPO-HERNANDORENA, a fruit exposure in the new Benimodo facilities (Saturday until noon). Here we will collect the most important stone fruit varieties from different breeders, which will be collected in their ripening from late April to early June.

Hernandorena: a reference in the kaki sector

Besides its importance in kaki plants, Hernandorena is a pioneer in the nursery production of potted fruit tree.

Rosa Hernandorena, the company’s commercial director, explains “it is a new product with which we believe has a lot of potential and although we are already selling it, we are still engaged with the research process, finalising small details.”

The company has different sales formats: the potted plant (a convenient format for the grower, with a compact plant and easy to hand) and the bare root (plants grown in field nurseries), which can be considered as a mixture production system of the former two, and has the advantages of both the other formats.

In terms of volume, the most important format is the pot, as it can be machined and controlled from a health point of view, in contrast to bare root which is a traditional crop, heavily dependent of the weather.

The company sells around half a million fruit plants and from them; the kaki is the star product representing 20% of their production and sales. Other products include almond, nectarine, plum, apricot, olive and quince (the latter with a production of 10,000 plants represents a high percentage of the entire Spanish crop).

Since the last four years, the volume of sold kaki plants has become a mainstay. However, the sales manager points out that “we will not increase the production and we will keep it around 100,000 plants. We are prepared for when this minority crop begins to be a majority one, and I firmly believe in the market abilities of the Spanish dealers”

Cultivation of Rojo Brillante can be done using two rootstocks, Lotus and Virginiana produced in equal amounts by the company. “In this area, the original land of kaki, growers prefer Lotus, which works well with the cultivation practices used in the area. In other larger areas we can usually find Virginiana”

The main sales area is concentrated around the region of La Ribera (Valencia), resulting from the high support that has had the kaki under the Denomination of Origin Ribera del Xúquer seal (Denominación de Origen Ribera del Xúquer). Other areas where it can be found are Andalusia, Italy, (where it is sold through a distributor) and Morocco.

Regarding the latter country, Hernandorena explains that “we have test orders that are bigger than what is planted here in Valencia due to the large size of their estates. We believe that production of northern Morocco could be a cause of concern in a few years”

Hernandorena also has contracts of propagation from certain Spanish breeders of early fruit plants .(Selecciones Doñana, Plantinova, International Plant Seleccion y PSB Producción Vegetal-Buffat), as well as experimentation contracts for varieties from Viveros Provedo.
